Two Crew Members Killed on Crude Oil Tanker ARAFURA

by | Sep 16, 2021 | Maritime Law, Wrongful Death

There was a tragic incident on the crude oil tanker ARAFURA on September 11, 2021.  At the time, the vessel was in the Drake Passage en route to Long Beach, California.  Reports indicate that two crew members were injured during heavy seas.  The crew members were checking compartments on the vessel when they were struck by a large wave.  The two individuals, the vessel’s Chief Officer and Bosun, both lost their lives in the incident.  Our thoughts and prayers go out to those impacted by this tragedy.

There have been a number of recent incidents involving vessels.  During Hurricane Ida, Noble failed to evacuate crew members from the Noble Globetrotter II.  There was a fire on the container ship MSC KATRINA on September 9, 2021.  There was an explosion on the LPG tanker FORTE DE SAO MARCOS on September 9, 2021.  There was a fire on the general cargo ship LOA FORTUNE on September 10, 2021.  There was a fire on the vessel SETIA ABADI 2 on September 8, 2021.  There was a fire on the product tanker SAMUS SWAN on September 11, 2021.  There was a deadly boating accident in Lee County, Alabama on September 13, 2021.

It can be dangerous to work in any industry when safety considerations related to dangerous weather conditions are not made.  This is especially so when working on a ship. Safe maritime transport companies must ensure that their ships do not put the lives of their crew members at risk.  When employers fail to account for dangerous weather conditions, catastrophic incidents can result. It is unknown if the Master of the vessel simply disregarded the typhoon, or miscalculated the path of his ship.  The risks of catastrophic death as a result of sailing into dangerous weather conditions such as a hurricane or typhoon must always be taken into account by safe maritime and cargo companies.
