There was an oil spill on the Mississippi River near Natchez, Mississippi on June 10, 2023.  According to the Coast Guard, it was contacted by Kirby Inland Marine in order to report an oil discharge from one of its barges.  The barge was part of the tow of the vessel Leviticus.  3,400 gallons are believed to have been discharged into the river.  The incident remains under investigation.  Cleanup operations are currently being conducted.

There have been a number of recent incidents involving vessels.  There was a fire on the cruise ship WILDERNESS DISCOVERER on June 5, 2023.  There was a fire on the container ship MSC RITA on June 6, 2023.  A vessel sank in the Corpus Christi Ship Channel on June 9, 2023.  A tour boat capsized in Lockport, New York on June 12, 2023.

It can be dangerous to work in any industry when safety considerations are not taken seriously.  Safe offshore vessel owners and operators must ensure that their ships do not put the lives of hard working men and women at risk.  Safe companies must be proactive and take preventative measures, including regular maintenance and repairs, to also ensure that the environment is not impacted.
