A tour boat capsized in Lockport, New York on June 12, 2023.  At the time, the boat was in an underground cave along the Erie Canal.  There were a total of 29 people on board the boat when it flipped over, throwing everyone overboard.  One person became trapped under the boat and drowned.  At least eleven others were taken to local hospitals for medical care.  The boat is operated by Lockport Cave and Underground Boat Ride.  The accident remains under investigation.

There have been a number of recent incidents involving vessels.  There was a fire on the cruise ship WILDERNESS DISCOVERER on June 5, 2023.  There was a fire on the container ship MSC RITA on June 6, 2023.  A vessel sank in the Corpus Christi Ship Channel on June 9, 2023.

It can be dangerous to work in any industry when safety considerations are not taken seriously.  Safe offshore vessel owners and operators must ensure that their ships do not put the lives of hard working men and women at risk.  Safe companies must be proactive and take preventative measures, including regular maintenance and repairs, to also ensure that the environment is not impacted.
