Explosion and Chemical Release at Oxychem Plant in Ingleside, Texas

by | Jan 28, 2022 | Chemical Release, Industrial Accident

There was an explosion at the Oxychem Chemical Plant in Ingleside, Texas on January 27, 2022.  Reports indicate that a valve ruptured when workers at the plant started up a piece of equipment.  This resulted in a release of chlorine which ignited.  Crews were able to contain the fire before it spread.  A shelter-in-place was ordered for nearby workers following the chemical release.  It is unknown if anyone was injured in the incident.

There have been a number of incidents at industrial and chemical plants.  There was an explosion at the Westlake Chemical South Plant in Sulphur, Louisiana on January 26, 2022.  There was an explosion at a construction materials plant in Hampshire, Illinois on January 21, 2022.  Two workers were injured in an explosion at a steel plant near Detroit, Michigan on January 19, 2022. A massive fire broke out at a plastics plant in Wharton, Texas on January 9, 2022.

Plants can pose significant dangers both to workers and to the general public.  When dangerous work is involved, extra precautions must be taken, especially when catastrophic fires or explosions can occur.
